One World Trade Center rises above the dense grid of Lower Manhattan at full dark, the Financial District's older skyscrapers crowding around its base. Completed in 2014, the 1,776-foot tower is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere — a number chosen to mark the year of American independence. Architect David Childs designed its tapered, eight-faceted form to recall the Twin Towers without imitating them, and the antenna on top doubles as a beacon for ships and aircraft. The helicopter perspective compresses the island's grid into a sea of glowing windows beneath. Freedom Tower at the center of New York, after the lights come on.
