Winged Victory of Samothrace - Louvre Sculpture Photography
The Winged Victory of Samothrace rises from a stone ship's prow at the head of the Louvre's Daru staircase, shot from below in black and white. Carved in marble around 190 BCE, the Hellenistic sculpture depicts Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, alighting on a warship to mark a naval triumph, her wings spread and wind-pressed drapery clinging to her body. Discovered in 1863 on the Aegean island of Samothrace and reassembled from fragments, the headless, armless figure stands roughly 2.4 meters tall and has presided over the staircase since 1884. A photograph of motion held in stone.
