Wildebeest pour down the Kenyan bank and into the Mara River in late afternoon light, the water turned gold around their churning legs. The river-crossings are the most photographed moment of the Great Migration — Nile crocodiles wait in the channel, the bank is steep and crowded, and the herd makes the leap only after long periods of hesitation gathered along the edge. Backlight catches dust, spray, and the rim of every horn, holding the column against a glowing water surface and the dark mass still building behind. A photograph of the migration's most dangerous step — taken at the moment the front rank finally commits.
