Vatican Gallery Fresco Ceiling - Rome Architecture Photography
The Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museums runs forty frescoed panels across a 120-meter corridor ceiling, each panel depicting a region of Italy — painted by Ignazio Danti between 1580 and 1583 on commission from Pope Gregory XIII. The vaulted ceiling above is dense with ornamental stucco and narrative panels in a saturated Renaissance palette, the whole composition converging toward the far end in tight perspective. Photographed down the central axis, the ceiling becomes a tunnel of pattern — geography encoded in fresco, theology framing geography. A corridor whose ceiling is a map of the world.
