Two escalators flank a broad stone stair in a Frankfurt U-Bahn station, rising toward concrete columns that open overhead like mushrooms, each crown ringed with a halo of strip light. The symmetry is almost complete: steel balustrades converge on the central column, and the black-and-white conversion reduces the scene to concrete, light and line. Frankfurt opened its first U-Bahn line in 1968, and its stations were built as public architecture rather than tunnels to hurry through. A commute rendered as a temple.
