A sea of red ceramic poppies pours across the dry moat of the Tower of London, each bloom mounted on a slender wire stem. This is "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red," the 2014 installation by ceramic artist Paul Cummins and stage designer Tom Piper that marked the centenary of the First World War. The work eventually held 888,246 poppies — one for every British and Colonial military death between 1914 and 1918 — handmade and planted by thousands of volunteers. The photograph sets the vivid red against the Tower's pale medieval stone, the contrast carrying the weight of the piece — a field of memory gathered at the foot of the fortress.
