The facade of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel glows in the last light over Mumbai's harbour, its red dome and arched balconies catching the warm tone of the setting sun. Commissioned by the industrialist Jamsetji Tata and opened in 1903, the hotel blends Indo-Saracenic, Moorish, and Florentine elements into one of the city's most photographed buildings, standing just beside the later Gateway of India. More than a century of arrivals and departures — and the resilience shown after the 2008 attacks — are bound up in this stretch of stone. Sunset light deepens the facade against the darkening sky.
