St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin - Medieval Tiles and Kneelers Photography

Sale price$39.00

Handstitched needlepoint kneelers hang from worn wooden chairs inside St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, their colorful geometric patterns a vibrant contrast to the magnificent medieval encaustic floor tiles beneath. Each kneeler is a unique work of devotion stitched by parishioners over generations bearing Latin inscriptions, heraldic symbols, and the names of Dublin's parishes and guilds. The richly patterned Victorian tile floor, with its diamonds of gold, green, crimson, and cobalt, creates a kaleidoscope of sacred color that has greeted worshippers since the cathedral's restoration in the 1860s. Founded in 1191, St Patrick's is Ireland's largest church and one of the few medieval buildings still standing in Dublin.
