The nose of Space Shuttle Discovery fills the frame beneath the arched steel roof of the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia, lit so that the black heat-shield tiles and the white upper fuselage stand out against the dark hangar. Discovery flew 39 missions between 1984 and 2011, more than any other orbiter, and has been on display here since 2012. Seen head-on and close, the shuttle reads less like a machine than a face. A spacecraft at rest, still looking up.
