Painted in bold, jewel-toned hues of red, green, blue, and pink, this vibrant mural pays tribute to the historic Seventh Ward of Philadelphia a neighborhood that was the heart of Black intellectual and cultural life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Figures spanning generations stand together in dignity, from scholars in spectacles to children in Sunday best to a gentleman in a top hat, while a hand presents the ward's name on a golden scroll like a proclamation of pride. The Seventh Ward was famously the subject of W.E.B. Du Bois' groundbreaking 1899 study "The Philadelphia Negro," and this mural keeps that legacy alive on the very walls of the community it celebrates. It is public art as collective memory colorful, unapologetic, and rooted in place.
