Sankaty Head Lighthouse - Nantucket Coastal Photography
Sankaty Head Lighthouse rises from the heath in Nantucket's Siasconset neighborhood, its red-painted upper section clean against a cloudless blue sky. Built in 1849, Sankaty is Nantucket's tallest lighthouse at 70 feet and was among the first in the country to use a Fresnel lens — its original first-order lens could project a beam visible 30 miles at sea. The lighthouse was physically relocated 390 feet inland in 2007 as the bluff eroded at nearly two feet per year, moved by the same ocean it was built to warn against. A beacon that had to be saved from its own subject.
