Sagrada Familia Tower Stonework - Barcelona Architecture Photography

The word SANCTUS spirals up the stonework of one of the Sagrada Familia's towers, the raised letters following the curve of the structure toward the sky. Gaudí specified inscriptions across his basilica's eighteen planned towers — the repeated "Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus" of the liturgy climbing the spires as both ornament and prayer. Begun in 1882 and still under construction more than a century later, the church treats its surfaces as text as much as architecture. The frame isolates the lettering against the pitted stone, catching the relief and shadow of the carving. A photograph of a single word built into the fabric of a cathedral.
