Sagrada Familia Passion Facade - Barcelona Sculpture Photography

A close detail of the Passion Facade sculptures on Barcelona's Sagrada Familia, the stone figures cut into sharp facets and gaunt, elongated forms. Josep Maria Subirachs carved this west-facing facade between 1987 and 2009, depicting the suffering and death of Christ in a deliberately austere modernist style — the visual opposite of the lush, organic Nativity Facade on the basilica's eastern side. That contrast was Gaudí's intent, who expected each generation to leave its mark on the still-unfinished cathedral. The framing crops tight on the stonework, drawing the eye to the rough chisel marks and the hard angles. A photograph of grief carved into geometry.
