An angular figure of the crucified Christ is carved into the pale stone of the Sagrada Familia's Passion Facade, the body reduced to flat planes and hard edges. The Catalan sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs worked on these facade sculptures from 1987 to 2009, choosing a deliberately stark, modernist language — a sharp counterpoint to the dense ornament of Gaudí's Nativity Facade across the basilica. Gaudí had anticipated exactly this, expecting later artists to add their own voice to the unfinished building. The composition isolates the sculpture against bare stone, letting the severe geometry carry the weight of the scene. A photograph of faith rendered in modern stone.
