Vivid red poppies stand in a field, their thin papery petals translucent where the light passes through them. The common or corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas, is a pioneer of disturbed soil — its seed can lie dormant for decades and germinates wherever ground is broken, which is why it spread across the churned earth of the First World War battlefields in Flanders and became the enduring flower of remembrance. The petals are so fine they read almost as stained glass against a bright sky. The framing keeps the field shallow, a few flowers sharp against a soft drift of red beyond. The photograph captures a wildflower that carries more meaning than its size suggests.
