A purple hibiscus blossom opens its layered petals in soft side light, the stigma and yellow-tipped stamen rising from the throat with the architectural precision the genus is known for. There are several hundred species of hibiscus across the tropics, but the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis cultivars produce most of the giant single blooms most people picture — including this deep mauve-purple, a color that does not occur in nature without help from a hybridizer. The bloom lasts a single day, opens at dawn, and falls by dusk. Photographed at peak, the flower is doing its entire job for the camera in one frame.
