Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture stands in vivid red and blue at JFK Plaza in Center City Philadelphia, the tilted O instantly recognizable against the cloudless sky. Indiana designed the image in 1965 as a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art, and the painted aluminum was installed here in 1976 for the U.S. Bicentennial. The stacked, serif letterforms became one of the most reproduced pieces of American pop art, and this version anchors what locals simply call LOVE Park. Shot straight on, the composition centers Indiana's geometry against open sky. The photograph captures the most copied four letters in art — at home in their adopted city.
