A peacock turns its head toward the camera, the iridescent blue of its neck plumage filling the frame. The colour is structural rather than pigmented — microscopic barbule lattices in each feather scatter light to produce the metallic blue and green that no dye can replicate. Pavo cristatus is native to the Indian subcontinent and has been kept in temple gardens, royal courts, and country estates for over two thousand years, where its tail has been read variously as a symbol of immortality, vanity, and watchfulness.
