The white steel ribs of Santiago Calatrava's Oculus arc overhead inside the World Trade Center transportation hub, the interior of the bird seen from inside the cage. Completed in 2016, the 800,000-square-foot structure serves the PATH trains that run between New York and New Jersey, and on every September 11 at 10:28 a.m., a skylight running the length of the hall opens to align the sun precisely with the moment the South Tower fell. Monochrome strips the building to its skeleton — beam, gap, arc, repeat. Architecture rendered as ribs and light, the way Calatrava drew it on paper before any steel was cut.
