In black and white, a young boy walks past a painted wall bearing a bilingual inscription: a German line and its English translation, “Many small people who in many small places do many small things can alter the face of the world,” credited as an African proverb. The painted panel, dense with visitors' signatures, belongs to the open-air murals that cover Berlin's surviving wall sections. The proverb's message and the single passing figure line up almost too neatly. A wall that once divided, now carrying a line about collective change.
