The Empire State Building rises through a golden Manhattan haze, photographed from a helicopter as the sun lowers over the Hudson. The west-facing setbacks catch the light first and hold it longest, turning the limestone facade amber for a few minutes before the city falls into shadow. The building's distinctive crown — originally designed as a mooring mast for transatlantic airships, a use that proved instantly impractical — became an antenna platform after broadcasting moved up the tower in the 1950s. The aerial framing places the building against the rooftops of midtown rather than the sky behind it, a portrait at the precise moment of its best light.
