A macaroni penguin peers over a lichen-crusted rock with the unmistakable swagger of a bird that knows it has the best hairstyle in the Southern Ocean. Its brilliant golden-orange crest feathers sweep back from the forehead like a punk rocker's crown, contrasting sharply with the sleek dark plumage and clean white chest. The heavy reddish-brown bill and red eye add intensity to a portrait already bursting with character. Behind it, the rocks of South Georgia dissolve into a painterly wash of grey and ochre, the yellow lichen echoing the bird's own flamboyant headgear. South Georgia hosts one of the largest macaroni penguin colonies on earth, yet in this intimate close-up, there is only one - poised, curious, and utterly magnificent. Works well in a living room, a mantel wall, or a wide hallway.
