A single flat-topped acacia stands at the right of the frame while a herd of wildebeest grazes the open grassland behind it, in black and white. The acacia's umbrella canopy — an adaptation that lifts foliage above most browsers and spreads it wide to catch light — is the signature tree of East Africa's savanna, and the scattered herd marks the seasonal movement of grazers that follow the rains across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. Stripped of colour, the scene reduces to texture and silhouette: feathery canopy, dry grass, and the low line of the horizon. The savanna at its most elemental — one tree, one herd, and a great deal of sky.
