Daniel Chester French's nineteen-foot marble Abraham Lincoln sits in contemplation inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, hands resting heavy on the arms of the chair and the long face turned slightly downward toward the reflecting pool. Carved from twenty-eight blocks of Georgia white marble between 1914 and 1920, the statue was designed to be a meditation rather than a likeness, and visitors have been responding to it that way for a century — quieter on the steps than anywhere else on the National Mall. Photographed from below in the dim of the chamber, the figure carries the entire weight Henry Bacon's neoclassical temple was built to hold.
