The coffered dome of the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building soars overhead, concentric rings of gilded rosettes radiating outward from a central oculus that floods the interior with natural light. Between the coffers, Edwin Blashfield's 1896 mural Evolution of Civilization circles the rim with allegorical figures representing twelve countries that shaped Western learning. Mosaics and ornamental borders frame every surface in gold, blue, and cream. The building opened in 1897, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz in the Beaux-Arts manner, and built largely by American sculptors and painters working in concert. The photograph captures a public ceiling that argues, in paint and gilt, for the seriousness of reading.
