Lee Monument Before the Fall - Monument Avenue Richmond Photography

The Robert E. Lee equestrian statue stands atop its massive granite pedestal on Richmond's Monument Avenue, its base transformed into a layered canvas of spray-painted messages BLM declarations, calls for justice, expressions of love and grief, and the raw energy of a community rewriting its own narrative in real time. Captured before the statue's removal in September 2021, this photograph documents a singular moment in American history when a Confederate monument became a gathering place for protest, art, and reckoning. The contrast is extraordinary: a bronze general on horseback, erected in 1890 to honor the Lost Cause, now rising from a pedestal that speaks in the voices of those the Cause sought to silence. Blue sky and bright sunlight illuminate every layer of paint and every word, refusing to let the image hide in shadow or ambiguity.
