King Penguins and Fur Seal Pups - South Georgia Wildlife Photography

A line of king penguins parades past a cluster of antarctic fur seal pups on the black-sand beach at Salisbury Plain, South Georgia. The site holds one of the world's largest king penguin colonies — roughly 60,000 breeding pairs share the plain each summer with fur seal pups born just weeks earlier on the same shoreline. Sea ice, krill, and sub-antarctic geography lock both species to this stretch of coast even as their needs differ entirely. Photographed at the height of the austral breeding season, when the colony hits peak density. Two species, one beach — Antarctica's strangest commute.
