Humpback Whale Breaching - Ocean Wildlife Photography

A humpback whale launches itself clear of the water in an explosion of spray, its forty-ton body suspended for the single split second the shutter caught it. Megaptera novaeangliae is one of the most acrobatic of the great whales, breaching repeatedly during the austral summer feeding season as it gorges on krill in Antarctic waters. The reason for the behaviour remains contested — communication, parasite removal, or pure exuberance — but the mechanics are clear: a hard tail-thrust drives roughly forty tons into the air. Photographed at high shutter speed from a small boat. A whale at maximum elevation — caught in the half-second it owns the sky.
