Hraunfossar Waterfall - Iceland Turquoise River Landscape Photography

A thousand small waterfalls seep through porous lava rock into a turquoise glacial river in western Iceland. The falls are not fed by a stream above but by meltwater filtering laterally through the Hallmundarhraun lava field, which erupted about a thousand years ago — the water threads through the rock and emerges at the cliff face along nearly a kilometer of frontage. The turquoise color comes from rock flour ground out by the Langjökull glacier upriver. Photographed in autumn, with low birch scrub already turning copper above the basalt, the image catches Hraunfossar at the seam where geology, water, and season meet.
