A narrow corridor runs between towering grey concrete stelae at Berlin's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the paving dipping and rising as the slabs climb above eye level, the path drawing to a bright vanishing point. Designed by Peter Eisenman and opened in 2005, the memorial sets 2,711 stelae in a grid on undulating ground, meant to be walked through in unsettling silence. The receding walls leave the visitor alone between them. A place of remembrance, built as disorientation.
