Round hay bales sit scattered across a broad green pasture, framed by a weathered split-rail fence in the foreground and a line of mature hardwoods beyond, under a clear summer sky. The rails — silvered with age and spotted with lichen — are the vernacular fencing of the eastern United States, split and stacked without nails. Behind them the cut field rolls toward woodland at the edge of Ardrossan, the historic estate on Philadelphia's Main Line in Pennsylvania. The scene is ordinary farm geometry: deep field greens, the diagonal of the fence, and the round punctuation of the bales. American pastoral, plainly stated.
