The fierce face of a guardian demon fills the frame at Bangkok's Grand Palace, its surface a dense mosaic of cut glass and colored porcelain. These towering figures are yaksha — mythological giants drawn from the Ramakien, Thailand's national epic — set to guard the temple precinct against malevolent spirits. The palace complex dates to 1782, when King Rama I founded the new capital, and generations of artisans have maintained its glittering ornamentation ever since. Shot in tight close-up, the photograph isolates the demon's bulging eyes and bared fangs from the architecture around it, letting the mosaicwork carry the image — a study of sacred Thai craftsmanship at arm's length.
