Gentoo Penguins Leaping an Iceberg - Antarctic Wildlife Photography

Gentoo penguins launch themselves off the edge of an iceberg into the dark water of the Southern Ocean, the moment of commitment frozen in colour. Pygoscelis papua is the fastest underwater swimmer of any penguin species, clocked at over 35 kilometers per hour, but the birds depend on long shore-based runs to reach foraging grounds across the open sea. Photographed from a Zodiac in the South Shetland Islands at the start of the austral summer, when colonies feed heavily to support newly-hatched chicks back on the rocks. The composition isolates the leap against blue — a working portrait of penguin commute.
