The stainless-steel curve of the Gateway Arch slices across a blue sky streaked with cirrus, the near leg catching light as a broad band while the far leg narrows to a bright filament. Designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965 on the St. Louis riverfront, the 630-foot catenary arch is the tallest monument in the United States. Cropped to pure geometry, the photograph reads as two sweeping lines meeting somewhere out of frame. Engineering as a single drawn gesture.
