Frauenkirche Dome - Dresden Baroque Architecture Photography
Dresden's Frauenkirche fills the frame with its sandstone drum and bell-shaped dome — the "stone bell" of Baroque Saxony. Designed by George Bähr and completed in 1743, the church was gutted by the firebombing of Dresden in February 1945 and left as a deliberate ruin under the East German government for four decades. Reconstruction was completed in 2005, using as many of the original blackened stones as could be recovered — still visible embedded in the new facade, dark against the lighter replacement stone. A building rebuilt from its own rubble.
