A small American flag is tucked into the black Gothic ironwork of a tomb enclosure in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, beside a rusted chain and padlock that keep the gate closed. Laid out on the hills above the James River in the 1840s, the cemetery is the burial place of Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler and of thousands of soldiers. The ironwork, the chain and the flag each stand for a different kind of memory: ornament, closure and remembrance. A gate that has been locked for a long time, and someone who still came back.
