The Empire State Building blazes in red and green against a dark Manhattan night, its Art Deco crown lit for the holiday season. The tunable LED system installed in 2012 replaced incandescent floodlights with millions of programmable color combinations, but the lighting tradition runs much deeper — colored lights first appeared on the tower for FDR's 1932 election win, and the building has marked holidays, sports victories, and civic events with color codes ever since.
