Colosseum Arches - Rome Architecture Photography
The Colosseum's outer arcade curves through the frame — three tiers of arched openings in travertine and brick against a flat grey sky. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed under Titus in AD 80, inaugurated with a hundred days of games. It held between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and was the largest arena in the Roman world. What reads now as a ruin was engineered for efficiency: eighty numbered vomitoria allowed the crowd to fill the seats and evacuate in minutes. A stadium photographed as archaeology, still legible as an engineering problem elegantly solved.
