Chinstrap Penguin Pair - Antarctic Snow Monochrome Photography

Two chinstrap penguins stand close together on antarctic snow, the dark feathered line beneath each chin giving the species its common name. Pygoscelis antarcticus breeds on the rocky islands of the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands, returning each austral summer to dense colonies that number in the hundreds of thousands. The pair photographed here held still for nearly a minute — long enough to read the small tilt of one bird's head toward the other. Monochrome treatment strips away the colour noise and leaves only what Antarctica is actually made of: snow, rock, and birds in suits. A field portrait — pared back.
