A cheetah stands on a low termite mound in golden grassland, body taut and head turned to scan the plain, its spotted coat lit by warm low-angle light. Cheetahs use raised vantage points like mounds and fallen trees to survey for prey and rivals across the open savanna. Built for speed rather than strength, Acinonyx jubatus can reach roughly 100 km/h in short bursts but hunts by daylight to avoid larger predators.
