Casa Mila Rooftop Chimney - Gaudi Barcelona Architecture Photography

One of Antoni Gaudí's rooftop chimneys stands guard atop Casa Milà (La Pedrera) in Barcelona, its helmet-like form gazing out beneath a moody overcast sky. The smooth, organic curves of the sandstone-colored sculpture evoke a medieval warrior's visor, earning these figures their Catalan nickname espanta bruixes — the witch scarers. Gaudí completed the building between 1906 and 1912 for the Milà family on Passeig de Gràcia, and UNESCO inscribed it as World Heritage in 1984. Shot from below in tight isolation, the chimney takes on a portrait-like quality, somewhere between ancient guardian and science fiction character. The photograph captures Gaudí's habit of dressing ventilation as folklore.
