Brown Skua in Flight - Antarctic Wildlife Photography

A brown skua banks low over a glacier face on the Antarctic Peninsula, broad wings angled into the wind off the ice. Stercorarius antarcticus is the apex avian predator of the Southern Ocean — a kleptoparasite that pirates eggs and chicks from every penguin colony south of sixty degrees and harasses larger seabirds into dropping their catch mid-flight. Photographed from a Zodiac at the ice edge, where skuas patrol for the cracks and weakness in colony defenses. A slower shutter against textured ice leaves a small smear of motion in the wing. The seabird most penguins fear — at work.
