The red-planked boardwalk of Brant Point Lighthouse leads the eye in perfect symmetry toward Nantucket's most beloved landmark, its white tower standing guard at the entrance to Nantucket Harbor. Established in 1746, Brant Point is the second-oldest lighthouse site in America and has been rebuilt nine times the current structure dating to 1901. Every ferry arriving on Nantucket Island passes this iconic beacon, and tradition holds that visitors toss a penny into the water as they pass to ensure their return. The soft overcast sky and muted tones give this photograph a timeless, almost painterly quality that captures the quiet grace of island life.
