The sandstone columns of the Brandenburg Gate rise into a clear Berlin sky, the bronze quadriga of Victory driving her four horses east across the top of the colonnade as she has since 1791. Built for a Prussian king, marched through by Napoleon, blockaded by the Berlin Wall, reopened the night the wall came down — this gate carries the entire arc of modern German history in its stonework. Stripped of crowds and noise, the upward composition reduces the monument to its essentials: six Doric columns, a triumphal arch, and one of the only chariots in Europe still allowed to drive over a city street.
