The legendary double-helix staircase inside the Vatican Museums spirals downward in concentric rings of warm golden stone, dark ornate railings, and softly illuminated treads. Designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932 and inspired by Bramante's original 16th-century staircase nearby, this architectural masterpiece allows visitors ascending and descending to travel without ever crossing paths. Looking down into the vortex reveals a mesmerizing composition of curves, light, and shadow that has captivated architects, artists, and photographers for nearly a century.
