Spring-green forest layers fall away from a Blue Ridge Parkway overlook, the Appalachian ridgelines softening into haze toward the horizon. The Parkway runs 469 miles along the mountain crest, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park — a Depression-era project begun in 1935 and not fully completed until 1987. This is the forest at the moment it finishes leafing out, when the canopy is at its freshest and palest green, weeks before summer deepens it. The photograph stacks the receding ridges into bands of cooling tone — the mountains in their quietest season, before the crowds and the color arrive.
