Atlantic surf crashes against the black volcanic sand of Iceland's south coast in a wall of white foam, the contrast between dark sediment and pale water rendered with the binary clarity of an etching. Reynisfjara is the most famous of these beaches — the basalt columns of Halsanefshellir cave sit just out of frame, and the offshore Reynisdrangar sea stacks are visible from the same stretch — but the water here is genuinely dangerous, with sneaker waves that have pulled visitors out to sea. The image trades on that tension: a beach this graphic and beautiful, sitting on an ocean this cold and unforgiving. Iceland's southern shore at its most elemental.
