The snout of Sólheimajökull rises beyond a flat plain of black volcanic gravel, its ridged surface striped white, turquoise, and charcoal where snow, ancient ice, and ash interleave. This outlet glacier of Iceland's Mýrdalsjökull ice cap has retreated markedly in recent decades, leaving the dark outwash plain in the foreground. The mix of black ash and blue ice gives the surface a marbled look. A retreating glacier meeting its own debris field.
