A wrought-iron spiral staircase winds up through the stone core of the Arc de Triomphe, the camera looking down the helix as it tightens toward the centre. Napoleon commissioned the arch in 1806 to honour his armies after the victory at Austerlitz, though it was not completed until 1836, long after his fall. Visitors who climb to the rooftop terrace, fifty metres above the Place Charles de Gaulle, do it the same way — 284 steps coiled inside the masonry. The photograph isolates that climb as a single geometric figure, the railing curving from bright to shadow as it falls away. The monument's hidden architecture, made visible.
