Snow-covered mountains rise above a cloud-banked Southern Ocean, the antarctic continent's edge softened by weather rolling in off the sea. The Antarctic Peninsula receives more snow and rain than the polar plateau to the south, and the resulting cloud cover defines the look of the coast through much of the austral summer. Photographed from a research vessel as the ship slipped between low cloud and a clearing horizon. A long lens compresses the layers — water, cloud, mountain, sky — into stacked planes of grey and white. The continent's edge, as it actually looks: half hidden, mostly weather.
